BAS and GST: What You Actually Need to Know

You know the feeling. Somewhere in the back of your mind, a little alarm goes off: BAS is due soon. You're not entirely sure what number you owe, or why, or maybe exactly when it’s due, but you know it's coming, again.

If that sounds familiar, you're not behind. You're just one of the majority of business owners who never got a proper explanation of what BAS actually is, why it exists, or what happens if you get it wrong.

Let's fix that.

Why does BAS feel so confusing?

Because it's not one thing, it's three wearing a trench coat. GST, tax withheld from your employees' pay, and instalments toward your own tax bill, all bundled into one form with one deadline. No wonder it feels like a black box. Nobody sat you down and explained it, they just told you it was due.

Do you even need to be registered for GST?

If your business turns over $75,000 a year or more, yes, and you've got 21 days to register once you know you're going to cross that line. Under that threshold, it's your choice, some businesses register anyway because it works in their favour. Either way, once you're registered, BAS comes with it.

What actually happens if you miss it or get it wrong?

Penalties, for a start. But the bigger cost is the mess it creates. Wrong GST code on an invoice? You're now correcting BAS statements you already lodged, sometimes going back months. It's rarely one hard problem. It's a lot of small ones nobody caught in time.

You shouldn't have to be the one keeping track of this

You started your business to do the thing you're actually good at, not to become fluent in activity statements. That's the part we take off your plate. We lodge it, on time, every quarter, correctly, so it stops living in the back of your mind.

If BAS has been sitting there as a low grade worry, let's talk before the next one's due.
